How to Visit Kata Tjuta, Australia (+ Walpa & Valley of The Winds)

Wa l pa Gorge Walk Kata Tjuta, with its 36 domes, translates as 'many heads' and this short walk takes you into the deep cut between two. The gorge is flanked on one side by Mt Olga, towering 546 metres above the plain, significantly higher than Uluru.

Walpa (windy) Gorge is a 2.6km return walk following a rocky track that rises and falls within sheer red rugged walls, ultimately reaching a non-permanent stream. We left our visit till late in the day as it had felt hot, choosing to do the shorter Walpa Gorge Walk, before retreating to a little distance away to watch the sunset.

The Walpa Gorge walk will give you a similar experience with quite a bit less effort. This is a 2.6 km, 1 hour moderate return track along a well-formed path. The track squeezes between two of the largest domes at Kata Tjuta. It finishes at a viewing platform overlooking a lush area of plants and trees.

Walpa Gorge Walk is a beautiful 2.6km family-friendly hike inside Kata Tjuta in the Northern Territory of Australia. Kata Tjuta is about 40km from Uluru. The trail is fairly exposed, so go early especially on hot, sunny days. PERMITS. A park pass is required for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
